Welcome to the Department of Archaeology
The Department of Archaeology is dedicated to the critical study of humanity’s past through advanced theoretical frameworks, interdisciplinary research, and scholarly analysis. Our academic focus spans from prehistory to the modern period, examining material culture, landscapes, texts, and historical evidence to understand how past societies developed, adapted, and interacted across time and space.
Students are central to the department’s intellectual life. We provide a rigorous and supportive learning environment that encourages analytical thinking, theoretical reflection, and independent inquiry. Teaching is closely informed by staff research, enabling students to engage with contemporary debates in archaeological theory, historiography, and interpretative methodologies. Through sustained engagement with scholarly literature and conceptual approaches, students develop a strong foundation in critical analysis and academic writing.
Research excellence underpins the department’s identity. Our academic staff contribute to internationally recognised research in archaeological theory, heritage studies, and interdisciplinary scholarship, addressing broad questions concerning social organisation, belief systems, identity, and long-term historical change. We place particular emphasis on ethical responsibility, interpretative integrity, and the role of archaeology in shaping public understanding of the past. Graduates of the department are well prepared for advanced academic research and for intellectually demanding careers that require analytical rigour, contextual reasoning, and a deep appreciation of historical complexity.
